RECOUP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting plastics foam recycling, published the “Results of the Survey of Household Plastic Recycling in the UK in 2017”. The survey shows that plastic recycling rose slightly including Styrofoam recycling, EPS recycling and polystyrene recycling. Plastics foam recycling in 2016 exceeded 500 thousand tons in UK. In addition, the report emphasizes the necessity of investing in a recycling machine.
According to the survey, the total amount of plastic packaging recycling in 2016 was 2.26 million tons, including 1.12 million tons of plastic foam packaging in the UK. Plastic bottles accounted for 59.4 million tons, plastic basins, Styrofoam coffee cups and containers accounted for 525 million tons.
The total recycling volume of plastic packaging in 2016 is 105 million tons and the recycling rate is 45%. According to the survey, 63 percent of plastic packaging was exported, only 37 percent waste plastic foam is recycled. It is worth noting that there are up to 1.2 million tons of plastic packaging that haven’t been recycled and eventually sent to landfill or other destinations.
